Feynman Computing Center Installs Two New Uninterruptible Power Supplies
|
Vicky White |
The Computing Division has prepped Feynman Computing Center(FCC) for
significant expansion by installing two new uninterruptible power
supplies (UPS). The two new UPS boxes increase capacity by 50% and will
support hundreds of new computers, making sure that no chip is left
behind. Sudden loss of power to the FCC's computers would cause much of
the lab to grind to a halt. "If this building goes down, a lot of bad
stuff happens," says Vicky White, head of the Computing Division. "Bad stuff" includes equipment damage, expensive downtime from
physics processing, and loss of network connectivity. Fermilab suffers
several power outages a year, and the UPS system provides the FCC's
computers with a constant supply of electricity until the backup
generator kicks in. According to Gerald Bellendir, Associate Head of
Computer Facility Operations, the computers "never notice-they don't
miss a cycle." Jed Brown, Associate Director of Operations, points out
that the service is "vital to the lab. This is where users come from
all over the world to get data."

UH gets $35 million to join hunt for elusive neutrino
By Beverly Creamer The University of
Hawai'i has landed a $35 million, five-year grant from NASA to capture
ultra-high frequency neutrinos in the Antarctic ice sheet with the hope
of better understanding the origins of the universe. It's the largest single grant awarded to the Department of Physics
and Astronomy — and likely the largest ever won by the university as a
whole. read more

CDF reports new new measurement of pomeron production ratio
|
|
Schematic diagrams of proton-antiproton single diffraction and
double pomeron exchange (Click on image for larger version) |
|
A collision between a proton and
an antiproton at the Tevatron looks like a fireworks explosion
producing close to a hundred different particles flying in all
directions. However, at the Tevatron there is sometimes a large angular
region relative to the antiproton beam direction that is empty of
particles. Such patterns are thought to be caused by an antiproton
emitting a "pomeron" which collides with the proton to produce a
lop-sided explosion. In technical jargon, an event of this type is
called "single-diffractive" and the region devoid of particles a
"pseudo-rapidity gap." Events in which two pomerons are emitted (one
each from the antiproton and the proton) and then collide, produce
patterns with two forward rapidity gaps due to "double pomeron
exchange." The pomeron is presumed to be a nugget of energy consisting of
quarks and gluons, the same stuff the proton is made of, but in a state
with the properties (quantum numbers) of the vacuum. It is this feature
that allows the proton to remain intact when it emits a pomeron, while
it invariably breaks up when it emits a quark or a gluon. Studies of
pomeron exchange events may therefore lead to better understanding

of how quarks and gluons are confined within the proton or in what combinations
they can escape confinement.
CDF reports a measurement of the ratio of production rates of
double pomeron exchange to single diffractive events. The ratio is
found to be about five times larger than expectations based on
straightforward extrapolations from one-gap to two-gap rates, but in
good agreement with recent predictions that provide a unified description of several results on diffraction obtained by CDF and other experiments.
