Some computer tips
|
 |
I use the DELL latitide D830. Windows XP and Fermi SL4 are
installed as dual boot, and I run windows more of the time.
On windows, I run cygwin to use the linux-like environment.
Shown below are some tips / information I found useful to
set up my laptop.
- cygwin
which provides the linux-like environment to windows.
Can be used as a free X system for windows (I like it
better than xming)
- mrxvt which runs on
cygwin and provides a tabbed-version of rxvt.
- keychain Easy use of ssh-agent. Allow the
passwordless ssh login to hosts which do not support kerberos.
Doesn't work well with openafs (i.e. lxplus.cern.ch)
- Kerberos clients for cygwin
- Kerberos clients for windows (non-cygwin-based)
- andLinux+Xming
- andLinux
Complete Ubuntu Linux system running seamlessly in Windows.
Good, but seems a little unstable yet. Printing is cumbersome.
- Xming
- VMware & Parallel
- VMware.
I use vmware server and Fermi SL4 installed, but heavy.
- Parallel.
- EmacsW32 + wanderlust for email
- Ghostscript and GSview
- Emacs with Thunderbird
